How to Approach Career Change

Career change can be a positive turning point for some people, but on the flip side depending on the underlying circumstances it can also be a humiliating experience for others. Whilst some may see career change as an excellent opportunity to re-design their career paths, it is seen by others as a moment to heavily criticise past decisions and chastise themselves for not tapping into professional success earlier. The road to redefining one’s career goals may not be the easiest that has ever been trod, but in a world of aggressive competitors and volatile job markets it is the best approach that any professional can take to feel professionally accomplished in the long run. Some tips to bear in mind if you are considering career change are:

Be Optimistic:

Do not see career change as a doom’s day sentence. If you have worked in a particular industry for many years and due to a list of factors that particular position is not in high demand anymore then it is time to move on. This does not mean that you have been an incompetent employee over the years and it also does not mean that you will be ridiculed in the job market. Career change is a big step that any professional can make and is admired by those that may not necessarily have the courage to do so themselves.

Have a Plan:

Where do you intend to be once you have changed your career? –and why are you changing your career? These are just some of the questions that you will need to answer in order to establish a practical and feasible plan for your career path. Having a plan will allow you to know the steps that need to be taken to get the position that you want in a particular company. It will also help you to see future earning potential and possible growth in the future.

Get Careers Counselling:

Getting counselling about a career decision is a positive move in the right direction. A qualified career counsellor will assist in highlighting priorities and forming a plan in getting them accomplished. Someone that chooses to face career change alone runs the risk of being bombarded with uncertainties and lack of motivation to take the necessary steps towards changing his or her career.

Network:

Networking with people who are also considering the possibility of career change does have its benefits. Apart from the support that career changers can give to each other, there is also the possibility of having professional doors opened in the future. Networking is perfect for meeting new people and expanding your own list of contacts for future reference. By networking with the right people you can get valuable advice and tap into the opportunities that would otherwise be impossible.

Get Qualified:

Once you have taken the decision to change your career then you will have to get the relevant work experience and qualifications to be competitive. This can come in the form of online courses, evening classes, voluntary work, etc. The faster you work to get qualified, the sooner you can tap into your new career and make crucial decisions about the future. In many instances, it may not be possible to leave your current job to dedicate yourself wholeheartedly to getting the necessary qualifications to change your career. If you are financially dependent on your current job to move forward, then getting qualified for a new career may take more time; but it is not impossible.
