Having Your Say in the Interview

Some applicants believe that in an interview only the interviewer should ask questions. As a result of this belief, they lose the chance to ask valuable questions and show interest in the job and organisation that they have applied to. An interview should be seen as a mutual exchange of information and not just a one sided gain. Some important questions to ask in the interview are:

  • How has the company invested in its own competiveness in the last five years and what are its plans for the future?

  • In terms of professional ascension, how have employees evolved with the company and how has the company invested to make this possible?

  • How has the absence of a professional for the vacancy that I applied for affected the company in these last months?

  • If the job description was not clear about the company’s expectations regarding the position then use the opportunity to understand possible expectations and future evaluations.

  • Depending on the industry you are entering you may also ask: how has the company done its part in being environmentally aware of its actions and what steps have been taken to curtail certain practices?

  • If I am hired for the position where can I see myself five years from now in the company?

  • Does the company provide training and if so for how long?

  • What time frame is the company working with regarding professional maturity in this position?

  • How does the company maintain clear communication lines with its employees?

  • How has the company rewarded exemplary employees in the past?

  • How has the company attended to its client’s needs over recent years?

  • How technologically advanced is the company and how has it used this to gain an advantage in the industry?
