Professionals have different views when it comes to climbing the career ladder, so understanding where you would like to be in an organisation a few years from now is an essential part of establishing a plan to get there. Your personality should not have any loopholes that can leave people with doubts about who you are. You should have a consistent personality that cannot be questioned and that allows managers and to see you for who you are.

In a very competitive environment it may not be easy to maintain the same performance and results, but ensuring that you are improving a given situation rather than leaping on a spiral decline is key in winning confidence from others.

If you believe that your views and ideas can help the company to grow then defend them with facts, hard work and proven results.

Get involved in activities that will contribute towards your professional development. This can range from learning about new technologies and programs that can help the company grow to learning business concepts and approaches that have been used in the past. The more knowledge you have the more confidence will be entrusted in you.

Do not be the vile manipulative employee that gladly steps on moral values and ethics to get ahead in an organisation. Whilst in some professional circles this is often seen as the sacrifice that has to be made to be competitive, other companies prefer employees that are upright in their behaviour. Therefore, for example, if you know you boss has faults do not be the back-stabbing employee that sneaks around to point them out to others so that you can shine. Oftentimes, you will find that even if your boss loses his job you are the last person that was considered as a possible candidate.
